Jessica Smith is a Soil Scientist (M.S.), Certified Ecological Farmer, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, and co-founder of Grow Food Nation. With a BS in Sustainable Living and Living Soils, she combines her passions to encourage the earth and its inhabitants back into a state of balance and vitality.
She’s taught Nutrient Dense Gardening and Wildlife Habitat Restoration at the University of Richmond in hopes to improve soil health, ecosystem health, environmental health, and human health.

She consults with community organizations, schools, farmers, individuals, and online to help spread the message of growing food for better health and a better planet.

What The Soil Masterclass Is All About

Why Soil Is Awesome:

  • Carbon sink and storage to help mitigate climate change
  • Healthy soil supports a flourishing ecosystem and greater species diversity for both microbes and pollinators.
  • Healthy soil improves farm productivity and resilience with changing climate and extreme weather events.
  • Water filtration (less polluted waterways, better water quality)
  • Healthy soil acts as a sponge to catch and hold more rainwater in the ground where is recharges groundwater and aquifers.
  • It slows the flow allowing infiltration vs runoff, reduces erosion, and reduces evaporation.
  • Soil microbes make you happy
  • Soil exposure boosts your immune system
  • Healthy soil improves the nutritional value of food and forages for animals and people
  • It also provides plants with the nutrition they need to strengthen their natural resistance to pests and diseases
  • It is the foundation for all of life on Earth

Here’s What You’ll Be Learning:

  • How to identify your soil type
  • Walk-though on interpreting your soil test results
  • The importance of observation
  • Which composting system is right for you
  • All about soil amendments
  • Methods to keep your soil covered
  • How to build healthy soil
  • The connection between soil and human health
  • Soil hydration hacks
  • How to garden with minimal disturbance to the soil
  • The interconnection between soil health and plant health
  • How to inoculate the soil with beneficial microbes
  • Strategies for boosting soil fertility and resilience
  • Mindful garden management of weeds
  • The importance of the soil microbiome
  • How soil accumulates carbon and how to protect it
  • Techniques for developing a closed-loop system for nutrient cycling

These topics and MANY more will be covered in this high-level, professional masterclass!!
